PTE Core Test Format

Part 1: Speaking & Writing
This part of the test is approximately 50 minutes long and contains seven different question types. It is the longest section of the test. You will be tested on your speaking and writing skills, using English you might hear in an everyday environment.

Part 2: Reading
This part of the test is approximately 30 minutes long and contains five different question types. Because PTE Core is an integrated skills test, one question type ('Reading and Writing: Fill in the blanks') also assesses writing skills.

Part 3: Listening
This part of the test is approximately 30 minutes long and contains seven different question types. The questions are based on audio or video clips, which begin to play automatically. You hear each audio or video clip once. You are allowed to take notes.

Distinctions between PTE Academic and PTE Core

PTE Core is a brand-new, IRCC-approved general English test that measures your English proficiency outside of the classroom. This is how it differs from PTE Academic. All Canadian government economic visa categories recognize PTE Core, which is in line with the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level.

Apart from the aforementioned, certain questions from the PTE Academic test have been substituted by new ones in the PTE Core exam, and some of the current questions have undergone slight modifications. These inquiries are as follows:

  • Respond to a Situation from PTE Academic is replaced by Retell Lecture in the Speaking module. You must pay attention to a description of the situation in order to answer this sort of question. Then, in 40 seconds, reply in detail to a question regarding it.
  • Review the main points Summarize Written Text is unchanged, however the word limit for the summary has been lowered to 25–50 words.
  • Replace Write Essay from PTE Academic with Write Email in the Writing module. You have nine minutes to create a 100-word email in response to this sort of query.
  • Summarize Spoken Text summary stays the same, but the word restriction for the summary has been lowered to 20–30 words, and the response period has been limited to 8 minutes.
  • PTE Academic's Highlight Correct Summary for Listening has been deleted from PTE Core.
